Go from Palenque (Mexico) to Frontera Corozal when you want to cross to Guatemala, it is excellent, super easy and safe, there is a new hotel being built at km 100 from Palenque, the owners are super cool and they will let you camp and take a shower in the fresh water river if the hotel is not done by the time you pass this way. Like the Antelope wells crossing into Mexico it is little traveled by cycle tourists  so it is a great alternate to the overly done coast routes we have all seen a billion times. Plus you pass by two other ruins along the way as well as being able to be close to Tikal if you plan on going there. If you're a member of Warmshowers check Memo out Buenas Cosas in San Benito , super nice family of like minded people and great place to stay and volunteer.
